Economy Minister affirms agriculture boosts development

The Minister of Economy, Miguel Ceara Hatton, considered that it is important understand the role that agriculture plays within the development model to push the sector in the right direction.

When participating in a Confenagro meeting, Ceara Hatton stated that agriculture increases international competitiveness and guarantees the availability and access to food in the country.

The minister referred to this objective set forth in the National Multiannual Plan of the Public Sector 2021-2024 in the keynote conference “Dominican agricultural sector: current context and its relationship with the PNPSP”, in the National Congress of Agricultural Producers organized by Confenagro.

The president of the National Confederation of Agricultural Producers (Confenagro), Wilfredo Cabrera, announced that at the request of President Luis Abinader, the institution will provide the Government with a draft bill of Agricultural and Agroindustrial Development Law, which is contemplated in the National Survey of Agricultural Development.

He considered that eLegislation is a pending issue in the agricultural sector, because “it is not easy to move forward a country where we do not have equitable rules with respect to the countries with which we are competing in the framework of the Free Trade Agreement,” he said.

Cabrera indicated that agribusiness is part of the solution to market instability, and that this Law is required to stimulate the installation of new agribusiness companies and the creation of more quality jobs.

He explained that the livestock sector in the Dominican Republic has the best genetics in the world, and said that in the poultry area there were 20 genetic lines to produce chickens 15 years ago, and that today there are three left, of which two have 96% to world level.
