Here in the world of sports, we appreciate a good game, no matter its origin. Ice hockey might not draw massive crowds everywhere. Perhaps it’s because many places enjoy a warm climate. But there’s a universal truth: people love sports. Think about it. Who hasn’t been up late, flicking through channels, and stumbled upon a thrilling NHL game? We bet many hands would go up.
This shared love of competition brings us to EA SPORTS’ newest game, NHL 26. It officially launches this Friday, September 12. My usual beat covers a wide array of sports, often with a different kind of turf or track. So, I don’t follow the NHL series as closely as some other EA SPORTS titles. Still, a fresh perspective can often uncover what truly shines, or what just doesn’t hit the mark.
Be A Pro: A Small Player in a Big Bed
Let’s dive into what works, starting with my favorite part: the "Be A Pro" mode. This feature is like the crown jewel of the NHL franchise. It aims for glory. If we were talking cycling, "Be A Pro" feels like the Angliru climb in Spain’s Vuelta. That’s a queen stage, a true test. Just recently, a cyclist named João Almeida conquered it.
However, NHL 26 still trips over some old problems. It struggles to create a deep, immersive experience. Players want to truly escape into the game. They want to feel like they are living the athlete’s journey. Before we get into those tricky parts, let’s acknowledge a definite win. The graphics are a standout. EA SPORTS truly pushed forward here. The game looks more elegant and cinematic. You can see the effort to match the visual standards of big hits like FC 26 or Madden NFL 26.
A Few Slap Shots Missed
Now, for some of the things that don’t quite land. The "Be A Pro" mode lacks real depth. It doesn’t let players fully shape their journey. Sure, there’s a story, but the cutscenes quickly repeat themselves. You’ll soon see there isn’t much variety. Draft rankings don’t feel real. Even choices during the game, like your answers in press conferences, seem to have no real impact. A player in a Career Mode wants to walk in the athlete’s skates. NHL 26 falls short on this front. This mode has so much potential to grow and shine. Instead, it’s like a little kid lost in a King Size bed. It just needs more substance.
Realistic Play and Next-Gen Power
EA SPORTS put its biggest efforts into the gameplay for NHL 26. The way the game plays is better across the board. It truly brings you closer to the real experience. This is only the second game in the series made just for next-gen consoles. That means NHL 26 can really use all the power these machines offer. This takes the game to a whole new level. Pay close attention to the realism in how the game feels. The details, especially around the ice – which is the game’s main stage – are incredible.
