Dulquer Salmaan Car Seizure: Kerala HC Grants Relief, Demands Customs’ Evidence

It seemed like a bolt from the blue for fans and the film industry. Malayalam superstar Dulquer Salmaan, known for his charismatic screen presence, recently found his name linked to a high-profile car smuggling investigation. The Customs Department took action, seizing luxury vehicles connected to him. But now, in a significant turn, the Kerala High Court has stepped in, offering the actor some much-needed relief. This decision has shifted the spotlight from the investigation to the court’s scrutiny of the Customs Department’s actions.

The Customs Department had been looking into luxury vehicles brought into the country from Bhutan. They specifically seized some cars tied to the beloved actor. This move sent ripples of surprise across the entertainment world. However, the Kerala High Court has now provided relief to Dulquer Salmaan in this car seizure case. More importantly, the court has also demanded answers from the Customs Department.

Contacting Customs: The Court’s Advice

On Tuesday, the Kerala High Court provided clear direction regarding the luxury car seizure case. The court asked officials from the Customs Department some pointed questions. It advised actor Dulquer Salmaan to reach out to the proper authorities under the Customs Act. He should formally request the temporary release of his Land Rover Defender. Customs officials had seized this particular vehicle as part of ‘Operation Numkhor.’ The court stated that Dulquer is free to contact the Customs Department to reclaim his seized Land Rover Defender. The High Court also showed its firmness towards the Customs Department. It instructed the department to make a decision within one week of receiving Dulquer’s application for the car’s release.

“Where is the Proof?” Court Asks Customs

Beyond just advising Dulquer, the Kerala High Court questioned the Customs Department about seizing Dulquer Salmaan’s Land Rover. A report from Live Law states that the court pointed to a lack of sufficient reasons and evidence. The court directly asked Customs officials what grounds they had for the seizure. During the hearing for Dulquer’s petition, the judge specifically asked Customs officials, “What documents do you have? What evidence do you possess regarding this matter?”

The Heart of the Matter

This whole situation began under ‘Operation Numkhor.’ This operation aimed to find people evading taxes and bringing vehicles into India from Bhutan using fake registrations. Customs officials raided Dulquer’s home as part of this effort. They then took his vehicle into custody. Dulquer Salmaan felt this action was too quick and unfair. So, he decided to take his case to the High Court. He has since received temporary relief from the court in this matter.
