Drunk Driver Hits Pregnant Woman, Killing Unborn Baby, Family Demands Justice

The family of 22-year-old Valeria is going through an unimaginable ordeal, with no words able to capture the depth of their pain and grief. A close friend of Valeria’s described the situation as “horrible,” saying that everyone is “totally devastated” by the events that have unfolded. Valeria, who is currently hospitalized in Maldonado, was struck by a car driven by an intoxicated driver while riding her motorcycle on the rambla of Punta del Este. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in Valeria losing her pregnancy and her 8-year-old daughter suffering minor injuries.

According to Valeria’s friend, who spoke to News Agency, Valeria’s condition is grave, and the first 72 hours are crucial in determining her recovery. Despite the dire circumstances, the friend expressed optimism about Valeria’s prognosis, citing her strength and resilience. Valeria has suffered multiple fractures, including to her left arm and right wrist, as well as a displaced pelvis and hip dislocation. For now, these traumatic injuries have taken a backseat to more pressing concerns.

The medical team is particularly worried about the presence of blood spots in Valeria’s head, which they hope her body will absorb on its own. Additionally, she has blood in her lungs, for which she is receiving drainage treatment. A more significant concern is that her blood pressure can only be controlled with medication, meaning that her body needs to respond on its own. As her friend emphasized, “She has to recover by herself.”

Valeria was expecting to give birth to her baby in May, but tragically, the baby was born with a heartbeat at the hospital, only to pass away despite the medical team’s best efforts. The friend explained that the baby didn’t survive because Valeria had lost a significant amount of blood, which meant that the baby wasn’t receiving the necessary oxygen and nutrients. The loss is all the more heartbreaking because, as the friend put it, “The baby was beautiful, and we had to say goodbye.”

The family’s primary concern now is seeking justice for the senseless tragedy that has befallen them. As Valeria’s friend poignantly stated, “All we want, aside from trying to cope with the immense pain and anguish, is for justice to be served, because this cannot be left as is.” The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man, remains hospitalized with a cervical fracture and has yet to be questioned by the authorities due to his condition. The breathalyzer test confirmed that he was driving under the influence.
