FC Porto marked the 22nd anniversary of its Estádio do Dragão, a venue whose inaugural match — featuring a debut by Lionel Messi and a decisive victory for the home side — proved to be a powerful omen for two decades of unparalleled success.
Opened on November 16, 2003, the stadium has since served as the backdrop for FC Porto’s celebration of 34 national, European, and world titles. This tally underscores the venue’s role as a cornerstone of the club’s achievements.
The stadium’s opening game saw FC Porto defeat Spanish giants Barcelona 2-0. This match gained particular prominence as it marked the professional debut of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi for Barcelona.
Derlei scored the first goal for the home team from a penalty kick. Hugo Almeida then secured the 2-0 victory with a second-half goal.
This inaugural triumph foreshadowed an extraordinary first season for the club. In that initial year, FC Porto remarkably secured the national league, the prestigious European Champions League, and the Intercontinental Cup titles.
The club’s official newsletter, ‘Dragões Diário’, celebrated the enduring spirit of the venue. It noted that “The Dragon’s flame has been burning for 22 years.”
Estádio do Dragão is widely regarded as a worthy successor to the club’s former home, Estádio das Antas. It has witnessed more than 1,100 goals scored across 523 official matches.
FC Porto emphasized that despite its rich history, “many chapters” remain to be written in the stadium’s story.
