Martin’s statement is rooted in the knowledge that players have achieved similar feats in other games. He mentions that if players can beat Dark Souls without taking damage or complete Doom 2016 on the Nightmare difficulty level using only a pistol, then it’s likely they can find a way to conquer Doom: The Dark Ages with just melee weapons and a shield. However, he also acknowledges that this won’t be an easy task, as the shield and close-range weapons, although powerful, will require skillful use to overcome the game’s diverse and formidable enemies.
Marty Stratton, a producer at id Software, adds that relying solely on melee combat and a shield throughout the game might not provide the most enjoyable experience. The game’s monsters have a wide range of movement patterns, making battles against flying or fast-moving enemies with just a sword and shield potentially frustrating. Stratton’s warning suggests that while the challenge is theoretically possible, it may not be the most satisfying way to play the game.
