Donald Glover Cast as Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Reveal

Nintendo and Illumination officially announced Donald Glover will voice the green dinosaur Yoshi in the upcoming animated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The casting was revealed alongside a new trailer during a Nintendo Direct livestream on Monday, March 9, 2026.

The follow-up to the 2023 box-office hit is officially slated for a theatrical release on April 1, 2026. The new footage moves the cinematic franchise into outer space, adopting the gravity-bending themes of the 2007 Nintendo Wii video game.

The trailer shows Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach navigating diverse extraterrestrial environments. The heroes are seen traversing a volcanic world, a deep underwater zone, and a neon-lit techno planet featuring gravity-defying platforming hazards.

Glover joins a slate of newly announced voice actors for the sequel. Luis Guzmán will voice Wart, Issa Rae joins as the Honey Queen, Benny Safdie takes the role of Bowser Jr., and Brie Larson will play Princess Rosalina.

They join the returning ensemble cast from the first film. Chris Pratt reprises his role as Mario, alongside Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct the project, continuing the partnership between Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures in the entertainment space.

Universal Pictures will distribute the film to theaters globally starting April 1, 2026.
