Don Antonio Sainz, father and grandfather of champions, dies

sad loss in family Sainz. Don Antony, father of the two-time world rally champion and triple Dakar winner, and grandfather of the Ferrari driver in Formula 1, has died at the age of 97. A self-made successful businessman, his absence leaves a deep pain in the most important saga of motor sport in Spain.

Don Antonio was never fond of motor racing, a specialty of which his two sons, Carlos and Antonio, are passionate. The rally and Dakar legend had to start racing with the Renault 5 that he bought for her to go to university without him knowing.

In 1990 Don Antonio had the opportunity to get on the Toyota Celica in Australia with which his son won the first world rally title: “I am speechless. I never thought that a human being could have such a mastery over a machine. That man is my son. I am very impressed,” he said after the experience.

He has not been able to complete his century of life, but he leaves an impressive legacy, not only with his son and grandson who are motorsport champions, but also through his business career and the rest of the family, an exemplary saga. Rest in peace.
