Dominican Republic get bronze medals in Peru International Series 2022

The Quisqueyan badminton players Juleixi Acosta and Nairoby Jiménez won a bronze medal in the Peru International Series 2022 Championship, an event that took place at the headquarters of the Villa El Salvador Regatta Club in this city, with ten thousand dollars in prizes.

“We appreciate the effort that our leaders have made by putting their personal money to send us here to Peru. We just started to get to know each other as a couple and we already won a bronze. Now we are going for more”, expressed Acosta after his participation in the contest.

The Dominicans (Acosta and Jiménez) later succumbed in the semifinal against the Brazilians Jacqueline and Samia Lima, 21-8, 21-8.

Las Lima (BRA) on their side, who were the first seeded in the fair, took the tournament, having in the round of the best 8 of the Peruvian duet of Inés Castillo and Paula de la Torre in runs of 21-17, 21 -12, then, defeating the Quisqueyanas in the semifinal, to be crowned in the final against their compatriots Sania Lima and Taimares Santos, 21-13, 21-13.

In the Dominican delegation, the performance of Jiménez (Nairoby) in singles was also highlighted, when she equalized the action at one set apiece against the Mexican Romina Fregoso (21-10 MEX) and (21-18 DOM), but she was physically worn out to the definitive one, yielding to his rival by (21-18 MEX).

In another match, Yonatan Linarez (DOM) together with the veteran Jiménez (Nairoby) won the first round against the Venezuelans Frank Barrios and Damaris Ortiz, and already in the second phase, they recovered from a fall in the first set (21-17 ) against the Peruvians Diego Subauste and Fernanda Saponara by coming out ahead 11-5 in the second quarter, when Linarez suffered a muscle sprain that prevented him from keeping up the pace of the game, the hosts closing the game with 21-19.

The fourth participating Creole athlete (Argenis Mariñez) succumbed in singles against the later champion of the tournament, the Brazilian Jonathan Matías, with a score of 21-12, 21-15. In the doubles, Mariñez fell together with Linarez (DOM) against José Guevara and Diego Mini (PER) in regulation 21-12, 21-9 and paired with Acosta (Juleixi) against the Brazilians Gabriel Cury and Jackeline Luz, for 21 -12,21-15.

The other individual performances corresponded to Linarez (DOM), who after beating Cuban Juan Carlos Bencomo, lost to Brazilian Deivid Silva, 21-5, 21-10; and Acosta (Juleixi), who was dominated by the Guatemalan, Nikte Sotomayor, 21-12, 21-5.

The other members of the Dominican delegation were Miguel Feliz and Rafael Santín, trainers, and Fernando Tiburcio (delegate).
