Dominican pitching weakens for the Classic

Three days before the deadline to make changes to the preliminary roster of 50 players for the fifth edition of the World Baseball Classic, the withdrawals of Luis Severino from the New York Yankees and Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers were confirmed. by decisions of their respective teams.

The information was confirmed to the Listin by the president of the Dominican Baseball Federation (Fedobe), Juan Núñez.

Severino has dealt with health problems in recent years. In 2022 he made just 19 starts in 102 innings of work. In 2021 he only pitched in six innings, in 2020 he did not see action and in 2019 he worked in 12 episodes.

While Peralta’s absence is due to an injury he suffered last year in his right shoulder for which he was only able to make 17 starts this season.

Other cases

According to Juan Núñez, president of Fedobe, Starling Marte, the Mets’ center fielder, will not participate due to the injury to his abdomen last year. Various media outlets in New York City indicate that Marte will report to the Mets’ training camps the first week, focused solely on the upcoming Major League Baseball season.

Last Tuesday, Jerry Dipoto, president of operations for the Seattle Mariners also confirmed that by mutual decision the Dominican pitcher Luis Castillo will not participate in the contest.

Last week, Nelson Cruz, the team’s general manager, announced that 18 players on the preliminary roster of 50 received objections from their MLB teams to participate in the Classic.
