Dominican Eury Pérez fans 12 in 5 innings in Double A

If you don’t know much about Eury Pérez, it’s time to pay attention: The 19-year-old pitcher dazzled with his performance for Double-A Pensacola 4-0 on Friday night.

Perez,the 39th major league prospect, struck out a career-high 12 batters — in five scoreless innings, in which he gave up one hit, hit two balls, and retired the last eight batters he faced in order. Of the 86 pitches he threw, 56 were strikes.

The Marlins’ number four prospect6-foot-8 had set his previous career best last year for Class A Lower Jupiter, when he struck out 11 batters on Aug. 7 in 4 2/3 innings against the Tampa Tarpons, allowing just one unearned run .

Perez quickly rose up the prospect list in 2021 after striking out 109 batters in 78.0 innings and posting a 1.96 ERA between Class A and Class A High. He limited opposing hitters to a .158 average with a .517 OPS and averaged 12.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Things haven’t gone so well for Perez in his first taste of Double-A this season. The Dominican gave up three runs or more in each of his first three outings, and entered Friday with a 7.50 ERA.

For the season, Pérez has an ERA of 5.29 with a WHIP of 1.12, 30 strikeouts and five walks. He has struck out 41.1% of the batters he has faced.
