Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness kicked off the grand ball of film productions in the mcu in 2022 after the ogre No Way Home in December 2021. The film that explored the multiverse a little more in depth was a box office hit with $954 million in worldwide revenue. During these additional shoots, many thought it was for Marvel to add high-sounding cameos to the cast to entice fans, already happy to have seen the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in No Way Home. But since surprise appearances are simply limited to Illuminati, this was not the reason for these additions. The most plausible explanation given by the screenwriter Michael Waldron was that the inversion of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange in the theatrical release timeline required the studio to sport a logical continuity between the two films. Indeed, if America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) was introduced in Multiverse of Madnessshe should have appeared in the film carried by Tom Holland.
slashfilm spoke with the star of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Xochitl Gomezon how the film’s reshoots changed the story and the introduction of his character from America Chávez.
“Yes, it changed a lot of things. The main thing about Marvel is that they do test screenings so they can get the movie to be what the fans want, to get them to be what the Marvel movies are. We made a lot of changes for this reshoot, it was pretty crazy. A lot of work, but it was really fun and it was challenging, but it was also really fun to rewire things I had already done, to do it in a different style with intentions and things different. One main thing that changed was that Defender Strange was saving me at the start and that was a turning point, that when he died it was me who was heartbroken that someone who cared of me and protected me had passed away. Then when we did reshoots, it was that main drastic change that Defender Strange was betraying me and trying to take my power away from me. »
A screenplay choice in total harmony with the cinema of Sam Raimi, a film noir with less sympathetic and less family-friendly characters, which immediately announced the color for this beginning of film. This change also introduced America Chávez a real distrust of the Weird from Earth-616.
