The tennis maestro Novak Djokovic secured his spot in the US Open’s round of 16 on Friday. He took down Britain’s Cameron Norrie in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year continues to showcase top-tier talent.
Djokovic, a legendary figure in the sport, didn’t have an easy path this time. He’s a record holder with 24 major titles. He’s also won the US Open four times before, in 2011, 2015, 2018, and most recently in 2023. Despite being the world’s seventh-ranked player, he dropped a set against Norrie, who sits at number 35. The tough battle lasted two hours and 50 minutes. Djokovic eventually won with scores of 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2, and 6-3.
At 38 years old, the Serbian star shows no signs of slowing down. His next challenge comes from an unexpected quarter. He will face German player Jan-Lennard Struff, ranked 144th in the world. Struff surprised many by defeating American Frances Tiafoe, who is ranked 17th, in the third round. This sets up an intriguing clash in the next stage.
The 145th edition of the US Open runs until September 7. Djokovic is chasing a significant goal here. He is aiming to win his first Grand Slam trophy of the current season. His last major victory came right here in New York, when he lifted the US Open title in 2023.
