Djokovic Comes Back To Overtake Teenage Frenchman In Bosnia

World number one Novak Djokovic had to come from behind after dropping the first set to beat Luca Van Assche, a French teenager, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday at the Srpska Open.

Djokovic, coming off an early elimination at the Monte Carlo Masters, also had to come back from a break of serve early in the deciding set to move into the clay-court tournament’s quarterfinals.

The 35-year-old Serbian went from less to more. He only gave up two points on his serve in the second set.

In just his third match on clay this season, Djokovic took 2 hours and 38 minutes to eliminate the 18-year-old Frenchman.

The 22-date Grand Slam champion said he doesn’t remember playing “on such a slow court in my career.”

“I couldn’t pass him any balls,” he said.

Van Assche, the 2021 Roland Garros junior champion, is the youngest player in the ATP Top 100. He started the week as number 87.

In another round of 16 result, Serb Laslo Djere upset third-seeded Borna Coric of Croatia 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-4.
