The veteran Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic, secured his spot in the second round of the US Open. This tournament is the final major event of the tennis season. Djokovic faced off against the young American talent, Learner Tien, beating him in three sets. It was a good start for the seasoned player.
On Sunday night in New York, the 38-year-old Djokovic got off to a flying start in his first-round match. He took the first set easily, winning 6-1. The Serbian broke the 19-year-old Tien’s serve twice, making a strong statement.
The second set, however, was a much closer affair. It was a true test of wills. The Serbian, ranked seventh in the world, only managed to overcome the home player, ranked 50th by the ATP, in a tie-break. The score finished 7-6 (7-3) for Djokovic.
Despite Tien breaking Djokovic’s serve twice in the third set, the record Grand Slam winner ultimately took that set 6-2. The entire match wrapped up in two hours and 25 minutes. Djokovic is clearly on a mission, eyeing his 25th career major title. He stands as a strong contender to reach the final rounds of this 139th edition of the US Open. Many also see the Italian Jannik Sinner and the Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz as top favorites this year.
Looking ahead, Djokovic will face another American, Zachary Svajda, in the second round. Svajda holds the 145th spot in the world rankings. Svajda earned his place in the main draw through the US Open qualifiers. On Sunday night, he defeated Hungarian player Zsombor Piros, ranked 156th, in three sets: 6-4, 6-2, and 7-5. It was a solid win for Svajda.
The tournament also features a strong Portuguese presence in the main draw. Nuno Borges and Jaime Faria are both competing. Francisco Cabral will also represent Portugal in the doubles category.
The first Portuguese player to hit the court is Jaime Faria, a 22-year-old from Lisbon, currently ranked 118th globally. He is set to challenge Spain’s Jaume Munar, who is ranked 46th. This match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM today, which is 4:00 PM in Lisbon.
Nuno Borges, Portugal’s top-ranked player at ATP No. 42, also has a big challenge. Just last year, Borges reached the round of 16 at the US Open. This time, he’ll play Brandon Holt, a 27-year-old American ranked 111th in the world. This will be their first-ever career meeting. Meanwhile, Francisco Cabral will partner with Austrian Lucas Miedler in the doubles competition.
