Djokhar Tsarnaev, the author of the Boston attacks in 2013, will he be executed?

Will Dzhokhar Tsarnaev be well executed for his crimes? This is what is at stake in the hearing organized before the American Supreme Court on October 13. The man, who organized the Boston bombings in 2013, could instead be locked up for life.

As a reminder, he was sentenced to death in 2015 for his involvement, while his brother, the other terrorist, had been killed by the police during his run. Together, they had left three dead and 264 injured with two homemade bombs dropped near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. They also killed a policeman during the hunt.

But on July 31, 2020, a federal appeals court in Boston reversed this conviction. A decision motivated, according to her, by irregularities in the choice of the jury. Two members had indeed posted messages on social networks with strong opinions before the start of the trial, without this being noted by the judge.

Joe Biden does not intervene

Donald Trump, then president, had asked the Supreme Court to take charge of the case to reinstate the death penalty in this case. The Republican then considered that “the death penalty had rarely been so deserved”. If, when he came to power, Joe Biden put an end to federal executions, he did not stop the procedure launched by his predecessor. In this context, the nine judges of the highest American court agreed to study the request.

It should be noted that the subject is debated among the families of the victims. Bill and Denis Richard, the parents of young Martin killed during the attacks, had asked the courts not to sentence him to death. Either way, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should never be freed, since if the Supreme Court overturns the death penalty, then he will be locked up for the rest of his life.
