Disney to Open Landmark Theme Park Resort in Abu Dhabi, UAE by 2030 Deadline

Walt Disney is set to open its seventh global resort in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, marking its first foray into the Middle East.

Big Plans for Abu Dhabi

The new resort will be developed, built, and managed by UAE-based Miral. Disney Imagineers will lead the design and planning.
The project is expected to be completed in the early 2030s and will feature one theme park and several hotels.
Josh D’Amaro, head of Disney Experiences, said the park will reflect the local culture and identity.
The resort will be located on Yas Island, a popular tourist destination featuring SeaWorld, Warner Bros. World, and Yas Waterworld.

Abu Dhabi’s Advantages

Abu Dhabi is just 20 minutes from the city center and 50 minutes from Dubai.
Disney estimates 500 million people in the region can easily visit the park.
This will be Disney’s first seaside resort.

Challenges Ahead

Experts warn that the Middle East can be a tough market.
Dennis Spiegel, founder of International Theme Park Services, noted that several theme park projects in Dubai and Saudi Arabia struggled initially.
However, he believes Abu Dhabi is a good location due to its existing tourism infrastructure.
Disney’s theme park business remains a key revenue driver, accounting for 59% of operating income in fiscal 2024.
While US theme parks saw a slight decline in attendance last year, numbers have rebounded in the first quarter.
In contrast, Disney’s theme parks in China faced challenges due to the trade war, resulting in decreased attendance and revenue.
