Surprisingly, Disney decided to plunge headfirst into the fascinating world of video games. The entertainment giant has announced an investment of 1.5 billion in Epic Games and wants to create a new “universe of games and entertainment” together.
This collaboration is based on iconic Disney characters and stories and will develop over several years. Both companies have extensive portfolios of characters and worlds, raising expectations for the type of games that will emerge from this agreement.
According to a press release, the partnership between Disney and Epic could lead to the expansion of the cinematic and gaming worlds of brands such as Disney Princesses, Kingdom Hearts, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar.
In a statement, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney noted that Disney already uses Epic’s technology, the Unreal Engine, in the development of video games such as Kingdom Hearts 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Both companies highlighted Fortnite’s various in-game events, such as the Marvel Nexus Galactus event in 2020, which attracted more than 15 million players.
