Disgraced Prince Andrew’s Rare Funeral Appearance, Awkward William Interaction

Prince Andrew stepped out with the royal family recently, marking a rare public moment. He attended the funeral for Katharine, Duchess of Kent, held at Westminster Abbey. Yet, it was a brief exchange captured on video that truly grabbed attention.

A clip from Tuesday, September 16, showed Andrew, 65, standing near his nephew, Prince William. Andrew seemed to speak, and William, 43, gave a polite nod. Then William quickly moved away from the conversation. This interaction immediately sparked talk among royal watchers.

Andrew arrived at the service with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. She is also 65 years old. The palace had confirmed Katharine’s passing at age 92 earlier this month. The Duchess of Kent was a cousin to King Charles III.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on September 5, shared with the entertainment news outlet Us Weekly. “It is with deep regret that Buckingham Palace announces the passing of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent,” the statement read. “Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.”

The palace statement also noted that the King, Queen, and the entire Royal Family joined the Duke of Kent, his children, and grandchildren in mourning. They spoke fondly of Katharine’s dedication to many organizations. They remembered her love for music and her kindness toward young people.

Prince William, along with his wife, Princess Kate Middleton, also attended the funeral. Kate caught many eyes by wearing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s pearl necklace. It was a clear tribute to the former monarch. Princess Diana had also worn these same pearls before her death.

Despite the touching nod to the past, most royal observers couldn’t look away from the uneasy moment between Andrew and William. Andrew’s complex history with the Royal Family explains this focus.

Andrew, King Charles’s brother and Queen Elizabeth’s third child, has faced many public struggles. He was officially stripped of his royal titles in 2022. This happened after his alleged connection to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a disgraced billionaire and convicted sex trafficker. Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers, claimed Andrew sexually assaulted her.

Andrew strongly denied Giuffre’s claims. “I don’t recall ever meeting this lady, not at all,” he told the BBC in November 2019. “It simply never happened.” Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against him in August 2021. They reached a private settlement in February 2022. Tragically, Giuffre died by suicide at 41 last April.

Before this recent funeral, Andrew’s last public appearance was in April. He attended the Easter service at St. George’s Chapel. At that time, he was only photographed with Sarah Ferguson, not with other royal family members. Andrew and Ferguson divorced in 1996. They are parents to Princess Beatrice, 37, and Princess Eugenie, 35.
