Discord's Ethereum and NFT Plans Off the Track After Backlash

Where Discord, known for its eponymous VoIP, instant messaging and digital distribution platform, hinted earlier this week about a possible Ethereum (ETH) and NFT integration. Now the company seems to be dropping these plans anyway.

From ‘Pre-Release’ to ‘No-Release’

The CEO and founder posted earlier this week a Tweet containing a screenshot of the app’s user settings page with an ETH logo and an option to connect digital wallets such as MetaMask and Wallet Connect. Following this, the CEO, Jason Citron, was bombarded with thousands of comments about the company’s possible crypto plans.

While there were certainly plenty of positive reports about the potential update, not everyone agreed with the decision. For example, several users have threatened to cancel their Discord Nitro subscription if the decision goes forward. Nitro is a subscription to Discord that gives users extra features for a fee.

According to these users, NFTs would be a Ponzi scheme and would be harmful to the environment due to the large amount of energy consumption used to mine cryptocurrencies.

Citron has now announced that the function has been moved from the ‘pre-release’ phase to the ‘no-release’ mode. He said the following about this:

“Thanks for all the perspectives everyone. We currently have no plans to launch this internal concept. For now, we’re focused on protecting users from spam, scams, and fraud. Web3 has a lot of good but also a lot of problems that we need to solve on our scale. More coming soon.”

Not everyone agrees with Discord’s crypto decision

Nevertheless, Discord remains popular for various NFT projects. The platform is increasingly being used to build communities for NFTs. Still, it seems that not all Discord users are fond of cryptocurrencies. For example, a Reddit post already received approximately 6,400 votes (Reddit’s likes), which read, “Please do not support NFTs” and was posted to the /r/discordapp page on Reddit.

This post wasn’t the only post with a lot of upvotes either. Another Reddit user, going by the name ‘CaboSanLukas’, indicated that he believes the NFT technology is a scam. To this he added the following:

“Imagine you buy a ticket that says you own the X image. But that ticket has no legal validity in any country. Also, the value of NFTs is based on pure speculation and scarcity.”

Reddit user “Atulin” also disagreed with the relatively new NFT technology. About this Atulin claimed the following:

“You burn an acre of Amazon forest to get a link to a receipt for a purchase of something. You don’t get that something, you don’t even get the receipt, you get a link to the receipt.”

Now Discord is reversing the decision. However, the company is not yet ruling out the doors for crypto projects on the platform going forward. It remains to be seen whether this integration may take place at a later date, or whether it may take another form.
