Disciplinary Board Probes Santa Clara Over Fan Lajedo Protocol Banners

Santa Clara fans protested against the controversy between the club and the Regional Government of the Azores

Sometimes, the biggest drama in sports doesn’t happen on the field. A recent match involving Santa Clara, on September 20th against Alverca, proved just that. It was the 6th league matchday, but a storm brewed off the pitch. The Disciplinary Board has since opened a summary investigation into Santa Clara. This move shines a light on a fiery protest by a group of Azorean fans.

These supporters walked into Estádio de São Miguel with more than just cheers. They carried two large banners, as the newspaper Record reported. These weren’t about goals or tackles. Instead, they highlighted a local political agreement. The deal was between the Regional Government and Santa Clara. It concerned a five-year concession for the natural grass pitch at the Lajedo complex.

One banner had a pointed message: "From the sperm whale to the bags, hypocrites criticizing Santa Clara." This text pulled no punches. It hinted at past troubles, like the costly SATA airline plane deal from when Vasco Cordeiro, a socialist, was president. It also poked at Deputy Miguel Arruda. He’s known for a famous "case of the bags" and was named by José Pacheco of Chega Açores. Both Arruda and Cordeiro were among the loudest voices against the Lajedo pitch deal.

The second banner delivered another strong message: "Your problem isn’t Lajedo, it’s Santa Clara." This banner wasn’t aimed at politicians. It was a clear jab at Clube União Micaelense. This club is a regional rival of Santa Clara. More importantly, it was a main driving force behind a petition to stop the Lajedo protocol. What started as a local pitch agreement quickly became a battleground of long-standing grudges and political jabs, right there in the stands.
