The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring a new variant of the coronavirus, dubbed “Mu”, which was first identified in Colombia in January, she said overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.
The variant – B.1.621 according to scientific nomenclature – has so far been classified as “variant to follow”, said the WHO in its weekly epidemiological bulletin on the evolution of the pandemic.
The WHO specifies that the variant has mutations that could indicate a risk of “immune escape” (resistance to vaccines), and stresses that further studies are needed to better understand its characteristics.

The risk of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, is increased for patients with Covid-19, according to a large American study published on Tuesday, providing a strong argument in favor of vaccination.
The risk of developing myocarditis has indeed been pointed out after the injection of the Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, especially in boys and young men.
But that risk is high after infection with the disease itself, according to this new study from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), which analyzed data from consultations in more than 900 hospitals.
