Diogo Jota, Jorge Costa Posthumously Eternized in Portugal’s Heroes’ Square

Tribute to Diogo Jota and Jorge Costa at Football City, with the National Team and political figures

A quiet reverence hung heavy in the air this Tuesday at Football City. Top leaders from the nation, alongside the entire national football squad, gathered there. The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro were present. Pedro Proença, head of the Portuguese Football Federation, also joined them. André Villas-Boas, president of FC Porto, completed the dignitary list. They all came to honor two beloved international players, Diogo Jota and Jorge Costa. Both passed away too soon just last month, leaving a void felt deeply across the sport.

The occasion marked the unveiling of a new space, a “Plaza of Heroes.” Pedro Proença spoke, setting the stage for the tribute. He explained this plaza would be a permanent home for “immortal heroes.” These are individuals who embody the country’s national spirit. They are recognized for their impact, both on and off the field. Their contributions have significantly boosted Portuguese football. Proença stressed that heroes like Diogo, his brother André Silva, and Jorge belong to everyone, not just one team or group. This new plaza stands as a tribute to their legacies and to all who have shaped Portuguese football.

Proença’s words carried extra weight, looking ahead to the next World Cup. He promised Diogo Jota’s spirit would guide the national team on their journey. “We will be ’23+1′,” he stated, highlighting a symbolic extra player. The team will draw strength from Diogo and André’s examples. This extra resolve will help them overcome tough moments. He was clear: they would honor the winning desire that always defined both Diogo Jota and Jorge Costa. Their memory would fuel the team’s pursuit of victory.

Rúben Neves, a close friend of Diogo Jota, spoke for the current national team. He extended comfort to Jorge Costa’s family and friends, and to FC Porto. Then, his voice grew more personal as he addressed Diogo’s loved ones. He sent a message of strength to Rute, the children, and Diogo and André’s parents. “We will do everything to keep Diogo present with us,” Neves declared. He now wears Diogo Jota’s number 21 jersey. Neves shared that he asked the family and the Federation for the number. “It’s a way to have him closer, to be with us. Nothing can separate us,” he added, a testament to their bond.

The ceremony concluded with the official unveiling of plaques for both players. Before this, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro presented “Athletes of Merit” awards to their families. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa then announced another special honor. Diogo Jota and Jorge Costa will posthumously receive the “Commanders of the Order of Merit” distinction. This high honor will also be extended to the entire national team. That team famously won the Nations League in October. It was a day to remember those lost, and to celebrate their enduring mark on the game.
