Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh recently shared a behind-the-scenes (BTS) video from the Met Gala. The video shows the making of his look for the event. Diljit became the first Indian to wear a turban at the Met Gala.
In the BTS video, Diljit meets his Nepali-American fashion designer, Prabal Gurung. Diljit is excited to see his outfit and notes that the Punjabi alphabet on the back of his hat is a highlight. Prabal Gurung praises Diljit, saying he admires his work and commitment to his identity. Diljit replies, “Our dress is going to be the best.”
The video also shows Diljit having fun. He makes a 11:11 sign on his phone for the camera. In another clip, he’s getting ready, dressed in a majestic outfit inspired by a Maharaja, complete with accessories. Diljit’s outfit at the Met Gala was an ivory sherwani-inspired suit paying tribute to Patiala’s Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
At one point, Diljit jokes that if this were a fancy dress competition, they would win. Talking about representing Punjabi culture on a global stage, he says he’s trying to bring Punjab to the Met Gala red carpet. He adds that many artists have tried before, but things happen in their own time, and Punjabi culture is rich and inspiring.
When asked who he was excited to meet on the red carpet, Diljit said he was looking forward to everyone seeing him. The video shows him entering a room where other celebrities, including Nicole Scherzinger and Tessa Thompson, are having their photoshoots. Nicole praises Diljit’s look. Later, he reveals that Shakira delayed everyone because her dress’s zipper broke.
