Fátima Bosch, Mexico’s representative, received widespread support from Miss Universe candidates and entertainment figures this week. This follows a controversial incident involving Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil.
The scandal erupted on November 3 during a band ceremony. Itsaragrisil referred to Bosch as “dumb head,” an expression implying she was foolish.
The executive holds positions at Miss Universe Organization and Miss Universe Thailand. He is also president of Miss Grand International.
Itsaragrisil reportedly questioned Bosch for not posting about the host country on her social media. Bosch clarified it was a misunderstanding.
However, the businessman reportedly stated, “If you follow orders from your national director, you are a dumb head.” This phrase sparked immediate controversy.
A viral TikTok video shows Bosch confronting Itsaragrisil. She told him, “We respect you, just as you should respect us. I am here representing my country and it’s not my fault you have problems with my organization.”
Bosch then left the room. She later spoke to the press, declaring, “I think the world needs to see this, because we are empowered women and this is a platform for our voice. No one can shut it down. No one will do that to me.”
Her final statement resonated widely: “It doesn’t matter if you have a great dream or a crown. If it takes away your dignity, you should leave.” This became a symbol of dignity on social media.
Iconic singer Gloria Trevi was among the first celebrities to react. She praised Bosch’s authenticity and bravery on Instagram.
Trevi stated, “I know what it’s like to be under the spotlight and feel the weight of criticism. That’s why, when I see someone like Fátima Bosch raise her voice, I can only applaud her bravery.”
Lupita Jones, a former Miss Universe, also expressed outrage. She posted on Instagram, advocating for pageants to evolve into respectful and empowering spaces.
Jones quoted Bosch, saying, “Raising your voice and speaking your mind can sometimes bring problems. But staying firm in your ideals makes you a consistent woman. That’s why I applaud and support Fátima Bosch’s words.”
Ximena Navarrete, another former Miss Universe crowned in 2010, offered her solidarity. She directly addressed the organizations managing these pageants.
Navarrete expressed a desire to see the Miss Universe Organization run events with “class and respect.” She suggested new organizers seek help from the original team, who “know how to do it.”
Alicia Machado, Miss Universe 1996, joined the support on a live broadcast. She voiced her frustration with a perceived lack of ethics.
Machado stated that “from ’97 to today, it’s still the same problem. It’s a cultural problem. I don’t understand why these international contests continue to endorse bad practices.” She referenced her own past experience with weight shaming during her reign.
Andrea Meza, Miss Universe 2020, used her television platform to support Bosch. She described the incident as “deeply regrettable.”
Meza added that Nawat’s actions were “unacceptable and completely removed from respect, integrity, and equality.” She noted that appropriate measures are reportedly being taken to protect contestants.
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, also recognized Bosch’s actions. She praised Bosch for defending herself as a woman and a Mexican.
President Sheinbaum commented, “My recognition because she experiences this aggression and very dignifiedly says: ‘I do not agree.’ It seems to me that it is an example of how women should raise our voices.”
