Diego Schwartzman advanced to the round of 16 at Roland Garros

Diego Schwartzmann advanced to Roland Garros Round of 16 after beating the Bulgarian in straight sets Grigor Dimitrov. The Argentine tennis player played at a very high level and prevailed by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2.

The “Little One”, located in 16th place in the ATP world ranking, beat Dimitrov (20) in two hours and a quarter of play. The Bulgarian is a rival who has always made it difficult for him and in fact is 3-2 down in the record after his victory in the French Grand Slam.

The 29-year-old Argentine will continue his journey in Paris against the winner of the match that will be played later by the world number one and defending champion, the Serbian Novak Djokovic (1), and the Slovenian Aljaz Bedene (195).

Schwartzman had beaten the Russian Andrey Kuznetsov (228) in four sets and the Spanish Jaume Munar (87) in five sets in the previous rounds. This Friday, he showed his best version against the bulgarianwhom he had not beaten since the 2016 Istanbul final.

The development of the match

The Argentine started the match with two service breaks and was up 3-0, with deep shots and always looking to dominate his rival, thus taking the set 6-3.

In the second set, “Peque”‘s dominance was overwhelming and that is why he was not surprised by the 6-1 with which he defined it and the approval from the stalls of his coach Juan Ignacio Chela, who applauded him and encouraged him not to slow down.

Schwartzman remained focused and despite trailing 2-0 in the third set, he recovered after adjusting his return and with deep forehands he came back in front to take the set 6-2 and the match.

Schwartzman’s satisfaction

“I played at a very high level, I’m very happy. The conditions of the field, very slow, favored me against a rival that always complicates me”expressed the “Peque” in dialogue with the press as soon as the game ended.

Schwartzman, a Roland Garros semi-finalist in 2020 and a quarter-finalist in 2021 (both times he lost to Spaniard Rafael Nadal), is the only Argentine to continue in the French Grand Slam out of a total of 11 who entered the main draw.
