Diane Keaton Dead at 79; Final Instagram with Dog Reggie Becomes Tribute

The world of cinema mourns the loss of a true original. Beloved actress Diane Keaton passed away on Saturday, October 11, in California. She was 79 years old. A spokesperson confirmed the sad news to People magazine. Her family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, offering no further details about her death.

Just a few months prior, on April 11, Keaton shared a heartwarming message with her fans. Her final Instagram post celebrated National Pet Day. It featured her cherished golden retriever, Reggie. The post was also a collaboration with Hudson Grace, a home decor company that sells Keaton’s own collection.

"Proof our pets have great taste too!" the company wrote in the caption. The message appeared next to a photo of Keaton with Reggie and some of her product line. "Happy National Pet Day from HG and Diane Keaton," the caption concluded. The post also included pictures of Reggie modeling a cozy dog bed from the Hudson Grace collection.

Fans have been quick to react to the news, filling her last post with messages of sorrow. "RIP," one user wrote, adding an angel and heart emoji. They remembered seeing her in Book Club just nights before. Another person shared, "I just heard the news and I am so shocked and sad." They sent "condolences and love to Keaton’s family and friends," adding, "RIP Diane. You left too soon."

Hudson Grace had first announced its partnership with Keaton in August 2024. Reggie, her loyal dog, was the star of that announcement as well. A photo from that time showed Keaton hugging Reggie. The caption read, "Happy National Dog Day!" It continued, "Our entire new pet collection is inspired by Reggie, Diane Keaton’s beloved dog!" The company invited fans to "find everything to spoil your furry friends" in stores and online. This included dog beds and Reggie’s favorite "KEATON" treats.

The Oscar-winning actress leaves behind an incredible film legacy. She was celebrated for her memorable parts in classics like The Godfather, Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, and the Book Club movies. She became a huge star in romantic comedies.

In 2022, Keaton shared with Us Weekly her growing interest in taking on more physical roles. Speaking about her role in Mack & Rita, she said, "I got to do physical stuff, which I loved." She hoped to do "even more physical things in movies." Keaton admitted she hadn’t had that chance in a long time and wished something similar would come her way. She added that she had "never done anything that silly" as that character. She felt it fit her personality. "You can be a mess. That’s when I feel best," she noted. She expressed a desire for another movie where she could do more of that, though she admitted, "It probably won’t happen."

During that same 2022 chat with Us Weekly, Keaton also touched on the idea of another Father of the Bride movie. She spoke about her former co-stars: Steve Martin, Martin Short, Kimberly Williams Paisley, and Kieran Culkin. "Nobody has brought it up. But if it happened, for sure. Of course, I would," Keaton stated. She praised Steven and Marty, noting their TV show Only Murders in the Building. "They are giants. They are incredible actors and comedians, smart, and all that," she said. "What they do on TV is truly remarkable."

Diane Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke. She adopted them both when she was in her fifties.
