New details have emerged regarding the death of veteran actress Diane Keaton. Her official cause of death has been confirmed as primary bacterial pneumonia, according to a death certificate obtained by People on Thursday, October 16.
Keaton, who was 79, had reportedly suffered from the illness for days before her passing on October 11. The document listed no other significant contributing conditions.
The certificate also confirms Keaton was cremated on Tuesday, October 14.
These latest details follow an earlier statement from the Keaton family, which People also obtained. The family expressed gratitude for widespread support and confirmed she died of pneumonia.
They also noted her love for animals and advocacy for the homeless. The family requested donations in her memory to local food banks or animal shelters.
Keaton enjoyed a distinguished Hollywood career, with notable roles in films like Annie Hall, Something’s Gotta Give, and The First Wives Club. In her later years, she explored diverse projects outside of acting. These included holiday songs, eyewear brands, and a cameo in a Justin Bieber music video.
Fellow actors have paid tribute to Keaton. Jane Fonda, her Book Club co-star, posted on Instagram October 11, calling Keaton "a spark of life and light."
Fonda lauded her "limitless creativity" and noted, "what an extraordinary actress she was!"
Sarah Jessica Parker also shared her sentiments. She remembered Keaton’s "unique talent and skill" from their work on The First Wives Club and The Family Stone.
Parker called Keaton’s filmography "moving, charming, and utterly her own," concluding that she leaves "A beautiful legacy from an exquisite person. She will be so missed."
