Dharmendra’s Lookalike Premendra: From Bollywood Hits to Obscurity

Premendra Parashar, an actor often noted for his striking resemblance to cinematic icon Dharmendra, is a compelling figure whose brief but impactful Bollywood career remains largely overlooked. Born Triloki Nath Parashar on December 2, 1942, his story is one of talent, early success, and a swift, enigmatic departure from the limelight. This week marks his birth anniversary, a moment to reflect on a career that promised much before fading into anonymity.

Premendra’s journey began far from the glamorous world of Mumbai’s film industry. He was born into a prominent landlord family in Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh. His father, who served as the president of the Fatehpur Sikri Municipal Board, envisioned a medical career for his son. However, young Premendra was drawn to the performing arts, a passion that would soon redefine his path.

While he was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in college, fate intervened during a film shoot in Fatehpur Sikri. Legendary actor Dilip Kumar happened to be in town, and upon meeting Premendra, recognized his innate talent and encouraged him to pursue acting. This unexpected mentorship emboldened Premendra to move to Mumbai and follow his dreams.

Upon arriving in the bustling film capital, Premendra decided to hone his craft. He enrolled in the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, graduating in 1966. It was there that director Harsukh Bhatt discovered him, reportedly remarking on his face, which he described as a blend of Dharmendra and Manoj Kumar. Bhatt was convinced Premendra was destined for stardom and cast him in his debut film.

Premendra made his Hindi cinema debut in 1970 with the film ‘Holi Aayi Re,’ starring opposite veteran actress Mala Sinha. His career, though brief, was marked by immediate success. Within just two years, he starred in five hit films, including ‘Deedar,’ ‘Saaz Aur Sanam,’ ‘Jogi,’ and ‘Duniya Kya Jaane.’

He shared the screen with notable actresses of his time; Rekha was his co-star in ‘Saaz Aur Sanam,’ and popular South Indian star Bharti appeared alongside him in ‘Duniya Kya Jaane.’ Despite this string of successful ventures, Premendra made the sudden decision to leave Bollywood. The turning point came when 12 films unexpectedly slipped from his grasp. Firm in his resolve not to accept side roles or villainous characters, he chose to step away from the industry.

Premendra returned to Fatehpur Sikri with his wife, Mandakini, and never looked back at his acting career. In his hometown, he ventured into business, a pursuit that would occupy the rest of his life. He and Mandakini had four children, who later took over his business operations. Premendra passed away in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, following a prolonged period of health issues, leaving behind a legacy of what might have been in the annals of Indian cinema.
