Veteran actor Dharmendra passed away on Monday at 89 years old. The news has prompted tributes from across the film industry. Director Sriram Raghavan shared insights into Dharmendra’s final film role in the upcoming movie ‘Ikkis’.
‘Ikkis’ is set to be released on December 25. Raghavan described Dharmendra’s performance as transformative on set. He noted that the actor would often arrive tired, but would become fully energized once the cameras began rolling. Raghavan called it “magic.”
This observation comes from their two collaborations. Raghavan previously directed Dharmendra in the 2007 film ‘Johnny Gaddaar’. He also helmed ‘Ikkis’, which marks the legendary actor’s last appearance.
Raghavan considers Dharmendra’s character in ‘Ikkis’ to be the film’s heart. He expressed hope that ‘Ikkis’ will serve as a fitting tribute to the late star. The film’s poster was recently launched, receiving a positive response from the public.
Raghavan recalled his initial nervousness when meeting Dharmendra for ‘Johnny Gaddaar’ in 2007. At the time, Dharmendra was a Member of Parliament and had largely stepped away from films. Dharmendra eased Raghavan’s worries, telling him that “nervousness is good; it keeps you alert.”
Dharmendra enjoyed the script for ‘Johnny Gaddaar’. He provided valuable feedback and even suggested improvements to the second half, which Raghavan incorporated. The actor also contributed a famous line to the film: “It begins out of compulsion, slowly compulsion becomes a need, then need becomes a habit.” He added several other dialogues as well.
Following ‘Johnny Gaddaar’, Dharmendra frequently inquired if Raghavan had a new role for him. When the story for ‘Ikkis’ emerged, Raghavan immediately recognized it as the perfect fit. He personally narrated the story to Dharmendra, who embraced the project with enthusiasm.
Raghavan views Dharmendra’s passing as a personal loss. He stated that he grew up watching the actor’s films.
