Dharmendra’s story is one of a kind. He’s a legend in Bollywood, known for his iconic roles in movies like “Sholay”. But what’s even more fascinating is how he helped launch the career of another Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan.

In an interview with ANI, Dharmendra revealed that he was the one who recommended Amitabh’s name for the movie “Sholay”. He said, “I used to meet Amitabh, and I thought he had a great voice and would do well in the film. I told Ramesh Sipppy, the director, to cast him.” And that’s how Amitabh got his breakthrough role in the 1975 film.

Interestingly, the role was initially offered to Shatrughan Sinha, but Dharmendra intervened and suggested Amitabh’s name instead. The rest, as they say, is history. “Sholay” went on to become a cult classic, and Amitabh’s career soared.

Dharmendra has always been known for his generous nature and willingness to help newcomers in the industry. He’s had a long and illustrious career, spanning over five decades, with hits like “Phool Aur Patthar”, “Mera Gaon Mera Desh”, and “Yadon Ki Barat”. He’s still active in the industry, with his next film, “Maine Pyar Kiya Phir Se”, slated for release in November 2025.

The movie “Sholay” itself is a classic tale of good vs evil, with Dharmendra and Amitabh playing two heroes who team up to take down a notorious dacoit, Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. The film’s success can be attributed to its memorable characters, catchy dialogue, and iconic scenes, which have become a part of Indian pop culture.

Dharmendra’s contribution to Bollywood is immense, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of actors and filmmakers. His story is a testament to the power of kindness, generosity, and talent, and a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one person to believe in you to change the course of your life.
