Can you imagine one of cinema’s biggest legends, Dharmendra, playing a totally different role in one of the most iconic films ever made? It sounds crazy, right? Well, he recently spilled some major tea about the classic 1975 movie, Sholay. Turns out, he almost didn’t play the lovable, boisterous Veeru.
This film, which many call an "eighth wonder" of the entertainment world, is still celebrated decades later. Dharmendra, who shared the screen with Amitabh Bachchan, has fond memories of it. He says the film is so good that no one could argue with calling it a miracle.
In a recent chat with ANI, Dharmendra revealed a surprising secret. He was actually offered two other huge roles in Sholay: the villainous Gabbar and the stoic Thakur. But he had his heart set on Veeru. Why? He felt a deep connection. He said Veeru was just like him, and that made the choice easy.
He really enjoyed filming Sholay. Among his favorite moments were the famous water tank scene, where Veeru threatens to jump, and the intense temple scene. But the scene that still sticks with him, the one he calls the most powerful, is when Jai passes away. It truly left a mark on him.
When asked about his acting process, Dharmendra explained that he doesn’t do a lot of fancy preparation. For him, it’s about becoming the character. He gets so lost in the role that he stops being Dharmendra. Instead, he simply is Veeru. He just melts into the person he is playing, making it feel natural and real.
Speaking of legendary details from the film, Dharmendra also highlighted a small but mighty character: the coin. In Sholay, Jai and Veeru often used a coin toss to make big decisions. Later, Veeru discovers Jai’s trick: the coin has the same mark on both sides. Dharmendra playfully remarked that while every character in the film is a hero, the real hero of Sholay is truly that coin.
This year, Sholay hits its golden jubilee – 50 years since its release! To celebrate, the film will premiere in Italy. What makes this event even more special is that it will be shown with its full, uncut version. It’s a rare treat for fans.

Directed by the talented Ramesh Sippy, Sholay remains a cornerstone of cinema. It featured an ensemble cast of stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri, and Amjad Khan. It continues to capture hearts with its thrilling story and unforgettable characters.
