Rookie Kerry Carpenter homered for the second straight night and the Detroit Tigers survived a crazy ninth inning to beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Tuesday night.
Cleveland manager Terry Francona was ejected for arguing with the umpires after Myles Straw was called for a strikeout with the tying run in third for the second out of the inning.
Plate umpire Lance Barksdale originally ruled that Straw had fouled a pitch off Tigers closer Gregory Soto on a 2-2 count.
The four umpires conversed before deciding that Straw had fanned out for strike three. Francona came running from the cave and argued furiously with Barksdale.
He was immediately sent off, but continued to protest on the field, while the crowd booed. Straw was kicked out as well.
Steven Kwan, who was 3-for-3 and walked, hit a ball to Soto to end the game.
Garrett Hill (3-3) limited Cleveland for five innings after giving up one run in the first. He ended up giving up four hits, with three strikeouts.
The loser was starter Zach Plesac (2-11).
For the Tigres, the Venezuelans Víctor Reyes 5-1 with a run scored, Harold Castro 5-3 with a run scored and two produced. Puerto Rican Javier Báez 4-1 with a run scored. The Dominican Jeimer Candelario 4-0.
For the Guardians, the Dominicans Amed Rosario 4-2 with a run scored, José Ramírez 4-1 with two RBIs, Óscar González 4-1. The Venezuelan Andrés Giménez 3-0.
