Detained by Israel, a Palestinian ends his hunger strike started in March

Palestinian prisoner Khalil Awawdeh, detained by Israel, announced on Wednesday evening that he had ceased his hunger strike, which he began in March. The 40-year-old West Banker has been in administrative detention since last December.

He had launched a hunger strike last March to protest against his detention, the reasons for which have not been revealed. Administrative detention in Israel is highly controversial, as it allows the government to detain people without formal charges.

A release on October 2

Palestinian officials put his hunger strike at 172 days in total, knowing that he had taken a break for a few days. According to the Palestinian Prisoners Club, an organization defending detainees in Israel, Khalil Awawdeh ended his action in favor of an “agreement” with Israel for his release.

“The news of the release fell today, so I will be released on October 2,” the prisoner said in a video shot from his hospital bed, where he is seen rickety and weak. “Until then, I will stay in the hospital to recover,” he added, referring to a “great victory for the people” of Palestine.

According to a doctor who visited him on Friday, Khalil Awawdeh had to be released immediately to have “a chance to survive”. “He weighs around 36 kg and suffers from pain throughout his body,” said the caregiver from the NGO Physicians for Human Rights Israel.

High tensions between Israel and the Islamic Jihad

After a deadly three-day military escalation in early August, Israel and Islamic Jihad announced a truce agreement. According to Palestinian officials, this provides for the release of Khalil Awawdeh and that of Bassam al-Saadi, tenor of Islamic Jihad.

Bassam al-Saadi, arrested on August 1, was formally charged by an Israeli military court with supporting and transferring funds to a “terrorist” organization. Several observers feared that the death in custody of Khalil Awawdeh could lead to new clashes between Islamic Jihad and Israel. Israel did not immediately communicate on this announcement.
