Russia and the United States have exchanged prisoners under an agreement, which comes at a time when tensions between the United States and Russia have risen since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This is the second occasion of exchange of prisoners between the two countries in the last eight months. The exchange of the said prisoners took place on Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Airport.

US President Joe Biden announced Griner’s release in a tweet saying that she is safe, on a plane and returning home.

He also posted a photo of Griner’s husband, Charlie Griner, with his tweet. US members of Congress, athletes and others expressed their joy at Griner’s release.

On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also confirmed this exchange of prisoners. In an ongoing statement, the spokesman said that Victor Bot has returned to his homeland.

In videos released by Russian media, Griner can be seen disembarking from a Russian plane at Abu Dhabi airport and being greeted by US officials, while Russian officials are seen hugging their prisoner.

A video later aired on Russian television showed Bout getting off a plane in Moscow, with his mother and wife present.
