Derek Gee, the ‘runaway man’ of the Giro, has an award… until 2028!

“25-year-old Canadian Derek Gee dominated the Giro d’Italia, made a name for himself and won the hearts of cycling fans around the world, which led the team to terminate his current contract and sign a new one for six years from 2023 to 2028. This is how the Israel-Premier Tech team announced the renewal of the Canadian, changing its transfer policy, after recent years in which the arrivals of veterans stood outlike Chris Froome, who are not achieving the successes that the team is looking for.

“We knew Derek had a great engine when we took a chance on him and signed him to our Continental Under-23 program a couple of years ago. But, at this year’s Giro, Derek showed that he has race intelligence and the ability to perform with the best riders in the pro peloton. It was a real coming-out party for Derek, jalong with the young teammates who accompanied him on our Giro team. Consequentlywe decided to reward Derek by terminating his neo pro contract and signing him to a new six-year deal, which will secure his future.says team owner Sylvan Adams.

This announcement comes just over a week after traveling to Rome for the final stage of the Giro d’Italia, where Gee garnered four second places, two fourths, won the most combative riders classification, and finished second in the sprint and mountains classifications. “Having a full WorldTour program to start the year was definitely an amazing experience, but I think it really showed the confidence the team had in me and absolutely helped me race with more confidence in myself. It was an incredibly easy decision for me to sign this new contract. I know that another five years is a long time, especially in the world of cycling, but this team feels like home.” explains Gee.
