Denmark to Ban Social Media for Under-15s Over Mental Health

Denmark is moving to restrict social media access for children under 15, aiming to protect youth mental well-being and childhood development.

The proposed legislation seeks to ban access to platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube for this age group.

A Digital Minister voiced concerns that social media “steals time from childhood,” underscoring the government’s motivation.

While a ban is planned, parents would retain the option to grant their children aged 13 and older access to certain platforms.

The initiative has garnered significant political support from most parties in the Danish parliament, paving the way for an official vote.

This move positions Denmark alongside other nations, including Australia, which last year implemented a ban on social media for children under 16.

Data indicates that young people across Nordic countries spend an average of two hours and 40 minutes on social media daily.

Popular platforms among Danish youth include Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

Officials believe the current level of social media engagement may be excessive for children under 15.
