Delhi MCD Slashes Film Shooting Fees: Capital Aims to Attract Producers

Delhi is rolling out the welcome mat for filmmakers, making it cheaper to shoot in the bustling capital. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has just slashed its filming fees. This move aims to draw more movie magic to the city’s iconic streets and historical sites.

The MCD dropped daily filming charges from a steep ₹75,000 to a much friendlier ₹25,000. This is a big step to make Delhi a top choice for production houses. However, getting those perfect shots inside the Delhi Metro can still cost a pretty penny, reaching up to ₹300,000 depending on the specific location and time needed.

While the MCD has cut its filming fees to ₹15,000 for eight hours and ₹25,000 for a full 24 hours (plus GST), other agencies have their own rates. The Public Works Department (PWD) asks for a base fee of ₹10,000. Places like Dilli Haat (INA) and the Garden of Five Senses are available for ₹80,000 plus GST per day. Yet, the Delhi Metro remains one of the most expensive choices. Officials from the Tourism Department noted its fees range from ₹200,000 to ₹300,000. This price changes based on the train line, station, and the time of the shoot.

Aims Versus Outcomes

In 2022, Delhi launched a new film policy with big dreams. It promised revised rates and subsidies, hoping to turn Delhi into a major film production hub. The policy even announced an “e-film clearance” portal. This digital one-stop-shop would link 25 different agencies. It aimed to clear film permits within 15 days, or even faster for an extra fee. Despite these efforts, government records show a slower start. Only 39 film projects have used this scheme in the last three years.

Favorite Spots and Newcomers

Some parts of Delhi just can’t be beat for a film backdrop. Connaught Place and Chandni Chowk are still the most requested locations. However, officials point to newer areas with cinematic potential. These include Bharat Mandapam, Bansda Park, Asita Bio-Diversity Park, and parts of the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. To sweeten the deal further, an annual Delhi Film Card is also available for ₹100,000. This card gives production houses discounts on hotels, travel, and logistics.

Delhi’s Starring Role on Screen

Even with past challenges, Delhi has hosted many famous film productions. The city’s unique character has graced the screen in movies like ‘Delhi 6’, ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’, ‘Aloo Chaat’, ‘Bewakoofiyaan’, ‘Ankhon Dekhi’, ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘Kesari-2’, and ‘Mardaani’. This new fee reduction might just help Delhi become an even bigger star in the film world.
