Delhi High Court Stays ‘Udaipur Files’ Film; Producer Amit Jani to Challenge in SC

Lights, camera, legal action! A film titled ‘Udaipur Files’ has just hit a major roadblock. Its release, which promises to tell a tough story, has been abruptly stopped by a court order.

The film is based on the shocking 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal. This tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, was allegedly killed after sharing support for a political figure online. His murder, disturbingly, happened on camera, causing widespread public discussion.

The Delhi High Court decided to put a hold on ‘Udaipur Files.’ This ruling came after a group called Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH) challenged the film’s public release. They argued that showing the movie could stir up trouble. They worried it might hurt community peace and put people in danger.

Filmmaker Amit Jani, the man behind ‘Udaipur Files,’ isn’t taking this lying down. He quickly announced his plan to challenge the court’s decision in the Supreme Court. Talk about a cliffhanger for a movie release!

Jani shared his perspective with ANI. He claimed he even showed the film to lawyer Kapil Sibal. Jani said Sibal still opposed it, suggesting it was because Sibal had been paid by the other side. The court decided to halt the film, but also told Jani to approach the central government. This government body now has seven days to decide if the film is “right or wrong.”

Jani voiced his frustration, pointing out a stark contrast. He highlighted that the film, which aims to shed light on Kanhaiya Lal’s suffering, was banned in just three days. Meanwhile, the actual murder case from 2022 is still waiting for a verdict. It’s a tricky path for any filmmaker trying to tell a sensitive story.

The ban on ‘Udaipur Files’ will continue. It will stay in place until the central government and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) make their final decision on the matter. The film was originally set to release on July 11. Now, its fate hangs in the balance, waiting for the legal dust to settle.
