Actress Deepika Padukone continues to advocate for an eight-hour workday, a stance she believes is especially vital for new mothers. Her firm position has sparked an ongoing debate within the entertainment industry.
This commitment reportedly led to her losing roles in major upcoming films, including sequels for “Spirit” and “Kalki 2898 AD.” However, Padukone remains steadfast in her demand and has garnered support from several industry peers.
Her decision to prioritize an eight-hour workday stems from the birth of her daughter, Dua. Padukone emphasized the need for new mothers to have support when returning to work.
Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar India, Padukone clarified her position. She stated that society has normalized overworking, often mistaking fatigue for commitment.
“Eight hours of work a day is enough for the human body and mind,” Padukone asserted. She aims to focus on this principle, believing that one can only perform optimally when healthy.
She added that a tired individual returning to work benefits no one. Her own office implements an eight-hour, Monday-to-Friday work schedule with robust maternity and paternity policies.
Padukone also champions making it normal for children to be present at workplaces.
The actress revealed that becoming a mother significantly shifted her priorities. Her definition of success has evolved to include physical and emotional well-being.
“Time is our greatest capital,” Padukone stated. “The freedom to decide how I spend it, and with whom, is the greatest success for me.”
Despite her strong stance on work-life balance, Padukone continues to take on major projects. She is currently filming “King” alongside Shah Rukh Khan.
She also has a high-budget film titled “AA22xA6” in the pipeline, featuring Atlee and Allu Arjun. Further details about this project are currently limited.
