Seven Prisoners Charged in Connection with Fatal Fire

A significant development has taken place in the investigation into the tragic events that unfolded at the former Comcar facility on September 25. Seven prisoners have been formally charged with their roles in the death of six inmates who lost their lives in a devastating fire.

Prosecutor Secures Formal Charges

Homicide prosecutor Silvia Naupp successfully achieved the formalization of the cases, with the seven prisoners facing charges of especially aggravated homicide and arson. As a result, they will be required to serve 180 days of preventive detention upon their release from their current sentences. The Prosecutor’s Office will continue to investigate their involvement in the incident.

Investigation Reveals Key Details

According to sources from the Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation has revealed that all seven prisoners played a role in starting the fire, which was preceded by a violent altercation. While these individuals have been charged as perpetrators, the investigation is ongoing, and additional individuals are still under scrutiny.

Victims of the Tragic Incident

The fire, which occurred in cell 94 of the right sector 2B of module 4, claimed the lives of six inmates. The victims were identified as:

  • Facundo Gutiérrez, 26, who was serving time for theft
  • Javier Bermúdez, 29, who was imprisoned for homicide
  • Pablo Méndez, 26, who was being held for robbery, theft, and reception
  • Carlos Silveira, 28, who was imprisoned for robbery
  • Flavio de Bernochi, 29, who was serving time for homicide
  • Esteban Martínez, 25, who was imprisoned for affray, personal injury, and trespassing

Previous Incident with Fatal Consequences

Tragically, this incident is not an isolated one. A similar fire occurred in the same module on December 28, 2023, resulting in the loss of six lives and leaving two inmates with severe burns.
