At least six miners have been killed in a fire at a coal mine in Russia. Dozens of miners are trapped in the mine. A rescue operation brought 236 people to safety.
285 miners were at work when the fire broke out at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine in central Russia’s Kemerovo region, rescuers say. In previous reports it was mentioned that 115 people were working in the mine.
The rescue operation is still underway. 43 people were injured and they were all taken to hospital. Two people are also in critical condition among the injured. Several miners are also said to have inhaled smoke.
According to an emergency service source, the fire started in a ventilation shaft, the Russian state news agency TASS reported. This allowed the smoke to spread through the mine. There would have been no explosions. There would also be no damage.
