Dead by Daylight Devs: Thai Ghost Krasue Chosen for Global Appeal

Video game developer Behaviour Interactive is broadening the scope of its popular horror franchise, Dead by Daylight, by integrating global folklore, most recently featuring the Thai ghost known as Krasue. The studio’s decision reflects a strategy to enhance gameplay elements and expand its international reach through culturally diverse narratives.

Developers Dave Richard and Mathieu Cote shared insights into the new “Sinister Grace” chapter during interviews at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show. They explained that Krasue was selected for its origins as a curse-born spirit, which provides rich narrative potential and unique in-game mechanics.

Furthermore, the character, named Burong within the game, already possesses global recognition, making her an ideal choice to extend the franchise’s appeal beyond Thailand. Burong is uniquely depicted as an opera singer, a choice influenced by the quality of Thai voice acting talent and the game’s emphasis on sound.

The in-game lore establishes an accidental connection between Burong and the survivor character, Wee. Wee, a drummer drawn to beautiful voices, inadvertently summons Burong after listening to her sing during her human life, setting the stage for their deadly pursuit.

Looking ahead, the development team sees potential for creating maps set in Thailand, possibly featuring locations like the city of Bangkok or dense jungles. They are actively encouraging community feedback on desired map designs.

The core inspiration for Dead by Daylight, the developers noted, stems from the universal concept of hide-and-seek, combined with the fantasy roles of hunter and hunted. Character development across the game is fueled by curiosity about various cultures, horror cinema, and different media.

Behaviour Interactive also confirmed the possibility of future film adaptations for the Dead by Daylight universe, citing a highly capable team, though specific timelines remain undisclosed. The studio plans to continue exploring folklore from various countries, aiming to integrate other “top” Asian and global ghost figures into the game for years to come.

When asked how they would survive if they were in their own game, Mathieu Cote admitted he had “no idea” and might not even try to run, having struggled to survive his own creation. Dave Richard, however, lightheartedly suggested he would attempt to hide in bushes.
