Roberto de Zerbi is back in the spotlight, with talkSPORT reporting that the Marseille coach is being considered for the Tottenham hot seat. This isn’t the Italian’s first rodeo in the Premier League – he left Brighton a year ago, and now he’s being touted as a potential replacement for Ange Postecoglou.
The suggestion comes courtesy of Fabio Paratici, Tottenham’s former sporting director, who was handed a global suspension for financial misdeeds while at Juventus. Paratici has since returned to the fray and is said to have put De Zerbi’s name forward for the job. Postecoglou is in his second season at the helm of the spurs, and despite guiding the team to the UEFA Europa League final – where they’ll face Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United in Bilbao – his position is looking increasingly precarious.
Tottenham currently sit 16th, and De Zerbi’s Marseille are just two points off second place in Ligue 1, with the second-best attack in the league – only PSG have scored more goals. De Zerbi’s credentials are certainly intriguing, but it’s worth noting that Paratici’s own future was recently up in the air, with rumors linking him to a return to Italy with AC Milan. However, those talks appear to have stalled.
De Zerbi’s credentials
De Zerbi’s Marseille are:
- currently second in Ligue 1
- boasting the second-best attack in the league
- having scored 67 goals this season – just behind PSG’s 85
As the speculation around De Zerbi’s future continues, one thing is certain – the Italian coach has a wealth of experience in top-flight football, and his tactical nous could be just what Tottenham need to turn their season around.
