UEFA today announced the names at the top of the list 2022/23 UEFA Player of the Year nominees. This outstanding news was announced as part of the anticipation of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which is scheduled for Thursday 31st August at the prestigious Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
As part of this award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in men’s football, the UEFA’s rigorous technical analysis first produced a list of outstanding players based on their outstanding performances both at club level and with their national teams in the exciting 2022/23 season.
Afterward, an illustrious jury composed of the coaches of the teams that took part in the group stage of the UEFA Champions LeagueUEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League 2022/23, as well as the Technical directors of the men’s national teams, cast his votes to select the top three nominees. This jury also included a Group of prominent journalists selected by European Sports Media (ESM).
When voting, coaches and journalists were asked to determine their top three players from the shortlist. First place gets five points, second three and third one point.
The bottom line was based on the total of Voices of this respected body of coaches and experts in sports journalism. Above all Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team.
The three players who achieved the highest score in this procedure are, in alphabetical order: KEVIN DE BRUYNE (Belgium – Manchester City FC), Erling HAALAND (Norway – Manchester City FC) and Lionel Messi (Argentina – Paris Saint-Germain, currently at Inter Miami CF).
