Croatia, Spain, France and the United States were designated this Thursday as the seeds for the draw for the group stage of the 2022 Davis Cup Finals, while Argentina will be in pot number three, as determined by the International Federation of Tennis (ITF) and Kosmos Tennis, the company that owns the event.
In pot number three, Argentina was drawn together with Serbia, Belgium and Kazakhstan for the draw that will take place in London on March 31 and that will determine the four groups that will compete in different venues from September 23 to 27.
This is how the drums were
Pot 1: Croatia, Spain, France and the United States
Pot 2: Germany, Canada, Italy and Great Britain
Pot 3: Argentina, Serbia, Belgium and Kazakhstan.
Pot 4: Sweden, Australia, the Netherlands and Korea.
According to the planned mechanism, the team led by Guillermo Coria will enter the draw and will have a rival from each of the three remaining pots. The top two from each group will advance to the knockout stage of the Finals which will take place from November 23-27 at a venue to be designated. For the group stage in September, the four venues that will host the event will be Malaga (Spain), Hamburg (Germany), Bologna (Italy) and Glasgow (Scotland).
For the Argentine team, which returns to the Davis Finals after three years and with Guillermo “Mago” Coria as captain, it is important to have avoided countries like Serbia (with Novak Djokovic) who, being in the same hype, know that It will have it as a rival, although it could play a complicated group if it is drawn in which Spain and Canada will share. This case occurs because the host countries will not be able to share groups, and Spain will be local in Malaga, while of the four members of pot two only the Canadians will not officiate as the venue.
Meanwhile, the current Davis champion, Russia, was excluded from the competition in the framework of the sports sanctions that were applied to the country due to its political situation with the invasion of Ukraine.
The stadiums designated for the group stage of the Finals will be: Emirates Arena in Glasgow; Martin Carpena in Malaga; the Hamburg-Rothenbaum in the German city and the Unipol Arena in Bologna.
