Cricket Australia is considering giving a big relief to star batsman David Warner. On behalf of the Big Bash League, Sydney Sixers manager Greg Shippard has requested Cricket Australia (CA) to allow cricketer David Warner to at least lead the home team. David Warner has been suspended by leadership for his involvement in the ball handling controversy.
Warner, along with then-captain Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, was banned from all forms of cricket for a year following the ‘sandpaper gate scandal’ during the Test series in South Africa. Smith was allowed to return to the leadership role after a one-year suspension, while Warner was allowed to play.
Shipyard said CA should consider removing the ban, which prevents Warner from leading a team so he can captain the Sixers in the upcoming BBL season.
“I think David has waited long enough. He is back in the Australian team and making a great contribution to the team and to cricket in general around the world,” Shippard was quoted as saying by Sen 1170 Mornings on Friday.
Shippard felt the BBL should change its player replacement model as current rules prevented the likes of Steve Smith from returning to the Sixers during the finale of Australia’s premier domestic event last season.
He added: “If Smith is willing to play for our team, then he should be given a chance.” The same goes for Josh Hazlewood, David Warner, Pat Cummins or Cameron Green and all the players from across the country who have been brilliant in all formats for the Australian team.”
Let us tell you that Cricket Australia is considering calling a meeting to remove Warner’s ban. Should this happen, Warner can be seen again taking command of the team.
