David Lynch’s creativity knew no bounds, and his passion for music led him to explore various artistic expressions beyond film. As a fan of music, he often incorporated melodies into his movies, but he also took his passion to the next level by actively participating in the music industry.
Collaborations and Music Videos
One notable example of Lynch’s musical endeavors is his collaboration with the German band Rammstein. He directed the animation for their song “Mein Land,” which is essentially a clip from his own film, Lost Highway. Additionally, in 2009, Lynch created an animated visual for Moby’s song “Shot in the Back of the Head.”
In 2011, Lynch also directed the animated short I Touch a Red Button Man, which was part of Interpol’s presentation at Coachella that same year. The animation was projected on screens while the band played “Lights.”
Furthermore, in 2013, Lynch directed the music video for “Came Back Haunted” by Nine Inch Nails, a visually stunning and intense video that even came with a warning for people with epileptic seizures.
Lynch’s Music Festival
David Lynch’s love for music was so profound that he even curated his own music festival, the Festival of Disruption, which took place in 2016. The festival was a unique space where music, film, and art came together, featuring performances by bands and artists, talks about films, exhibitions, and even meditation courses.
The festival’s lineup included notable artists such as Robert Plant, St. Vincent, Rhye, and Sky Ferreira, among others. The festival continued for a few years, with the last edition taking place in 2019, featuring a lineup that included Garbage, Phoebe Bridgers, Mercury Rev, and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem.
