David Bowie’s Daughter Lexi Jones Shares Autism Diagnosis, Finds Clarity

David Bowie’s daughter, Lexi Jones, recently shared some big news. The artist and musician, 25, opened up about being diagnosed with autism. She posted on Instagram in June, giving a heartfelt look into her journey of self-discovery. It was a moment of deep understanding for her.

Lexi explained that autism isn’t always obvious. “Autism doesn’t have one look, one voice, or one way it shows up,” she wrote. Many people learn to hide their autistic traits without even knowing it. She said getting her diagnosis helped her understand things she’d felt silently her whole life.

It’s pretty common for women to get an autism diagnosis later in life, Lexi noted. Often, girls are taught to “mask, imitate, and internalize” their feelings and differences. This doesn’t make their autism less real, she stressed. For Lexi, the diagnosis brought “words, clarity, and relief.”

Lexi felt it was important to share her story. “I share this because I know I’m not the only one,” she said. She believes that stories like hers deserve to be seen and heard.

For those unfamiliar, the Mayo Clinic describes autism spectrum disorder as a brain development condition. It changes how people see others and how they socialize. This condition often affects how people communicate with each other.

Lexi delved deeper into her personal journey in an essay titled, “The Silent Effort: Neurodivergence Through My Lens.” In it, she painted a vivid picture of her life before knowing she was autistic. She had always felt different, like she was trying to grasp things that came easily to everyone else.

She mentioned challenges with everyday things. Social interactions, handling sensory input, controlling emotions, and even basic daily tasks felt harder for her. “I never felt I belonged anywhere,” Lexi revealed. Trying to fit in, or “masking,” left her completely worn out.

One interesting point Lexi made was about her ability to talk about her feelings. She realized this sometimes caused confusion. People thought she was fine, or that she had a great handle on her emotions. “I’m very introspective and intelligently emotional,” she wrote. But, she added, “that doesn’t mean I’m not struggling.” She simply spent years studying herself, learning how to put her feelings into words.

Lexi described a “long and exhausting process of questioning myself” before finding clarity. She finally saw an autism assessor. “I received a formal diagnosis confirming I am autistic,” she shared. Hearing those words didn’t change who she was, but it gave a name to her lifelong experience. It felt like a powerful validation.

“Not because it solves everything, but because it finally makes sense,” she explained. The feeling of being overwhelmed, her sensitivities, the constant masking, the exhaustion, feeling out of sync — now she had a reason for it all.

“I’m still me,” Lexi firmly stated. But now, she can be herself with “more understanding, more self-compassion, and less shame.” It’s not about fitting into a box or chasing a label, she clarified. “It’s about being able to see myself clearly for the first time. And I wanted to share that.”

Two months after Lexi opened up about her diagnosis, she celebrated her 25th birthday. Her mom, Iman, made sure to share a sweet tribute on social media.
