Darvish dominates the Mets, Manny Machado drives in two and the Padres prevail

Yu Darvish denied the Mets hits until the sixth inning and Jurickson Profar homered for the San Diego Padres, who beat New York 7-0 on Tuesday in a matchup between the two best teams in the National League.

Darvish (5-3) gave up two hits in seven innings, struck out six and didn’t walk in 100 pitches. He hit three of the Mets’ top five hitters — Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil — and then retired 14 in a row until Mark Canha had his team’s first hit: a two-out single in the sixth.

The Mets lost Alonso after his hit early in the second. The first X-rays showed no injuries but more tests will be carried out. New York hitters have been hit by pitches 40 times this season, six more than any other team.

Taijuan Walker (3-2) took the loss after allowing four runs and five hits in six innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

For the Mets, the Dominican Starling Marte 1-0. Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor 4-0. Venezuelans Eduardo Escobar 3-1; Luis Guillorme 3-0.

For the Padres, the Dominican Nomar Mazara 3-1, with a run scored. Manny Machado, 1-4 with two RBIs.
